Lupus Nephritis

Lupus Nephritis is a serious manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that causes inflammation in the glomeruli—the filtering units of the kidney. This immune-complex–mediated condition can result in significant kidney damage if not diagnosed and treated early. Patients with lupus nephritis may experience swelling, blood in the urine, high blood pressure, or frothy urine due to protein loss. At Lake Erie Nephrology, we conduct comprehensive evaluations including serologic testing, urine analysis, and kidney biopsy when needed to classify the severity and subtype of the condition. Treatment often involves immunosuppressive medications such as corticosteroids, mycophenolate, or cyclophosphamide. Our team customizes therapy based on biopsy results and clinical presentation, while monitoring for both therapeutic response and potential side effects. We work closely with rheumatologists and other specialists to ensure coordinated care for patients with complex autoimmune disease. Our goal is to reduce inflammation, preserve kidney function, and improve quality of life. From Toledo to Oregon, our clinics are equipped to manage lupus nephritis with skill and compassion.
