Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA) & Other Tubular Disorders

Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA) is a group of disorders where the kidneys fail to properly regulate acid-base balance due to tubular dysfunction. This can result in chronic metabolic acidosis, growth delays in children, kidney stones, and bone demineralization. There are several types of RTA—Type 1 (distal), Type 2 (proximal), and Type 4 (hyperkalemic)—each with unique causes and treatment approaches. Our team at Lake Erie Nephrology specializes in accurately diagnosing and managing these complex conditions. We use a combination of blood tests, urine pH analysis, and imaging to confirm the diagnosis and identify contributing factors. Treatment often includes alkali therapy (e.g., bicarbonate or citrate supplementation), potassium management, and dietary adjustments. In addition to RTA, we evaluate and manage other tubular disorders like Fanconi syndrome, which can lead to phosphate wasting, aminoaciduria, and bone disease. With clinics in Oregon, Fremont, and Toledo, we provide expert care for patients with rare and complex kidney tubular conditions. Schedule an evaluation to learn more about your diagnosis and treatment options.
